Recent graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Jazz Martin, shows how to turn a plain trade show display booth into a work of art, increasing interest in the exhibitor’s booth. At the How Design Conference 2008 trade show in Boston, Jazz put his talent as a muralist to work in the booth belonging to FreshBooks, an online invoicing company favored by freelancers. Jazz is himself a user of FreshBooks.
Rather than using a traditional trade show display, FreshBooks brought in two eight by eight foot canvases and let Jazz go to work turning them into a bright and interesting mural that reflects the company’s fresh outlook. Jazz worked throughout the show, attracting the attention of visitors to the company’s booth. First he installed an entire canvas with the word “invoice, printed on pre-made heavy paper that he applied as you would wallpaper. The word is repeated dozens of times in various fonts, all in black and white, each panel slightly overlapping the next. After finishing this wall, he began applying large varying sized daisy like flower patterns surrounding the company’s logo that includes a leaf. The flowers were individually pre-prepared black and white outlines and he applied them to the canvas in an almost random, overlapping pattern. As the show progresses, Jazz began coloring in the flowers with bright, crowd attracting colors. Work continued throughout the show allowing strolling crowds a glimpse at the artistic product and introducing them to the innovative FreshBooks product. By the end of the show, FreshBooks had both attracted a crowd with their innovative trade show display and acquired a lasting piece of artwork appropriate for display in their headquarters.
